Trnovo (Hungarian Tarnó ) is a municipality in northern Slovakia with 356 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), which belongs to the Okres Martin , part of the Žilinský kraj and is part of the traditional Turiec landscape .

geography

The community is located in the western part of the Turzbeckens (Slovak Turčianska kotlina ) at the foot of Little Fatra in the valley of the brook Trnovský , in the catchment area of the Turiec . The town center is at an altitude of 460  m nm and is nine kilometers from Martin .

Neighboring municipalities are Trebostovo in the north, Príbovce in the east, Benice in the southeast and Valča in the south and west.

history

Trnovo was first mentioned in writing in 1256 as Tarnouch . From 1578 the village was part of the dominion of the Zniev Castle and from the 18th century it was owned by the landed gentry.

In 1785 the village had 62 houses and 284 inhabitants, in 1828 there were 57 houses and 411 inhabitants who were employed as forest workers and furriers .

The place in Turz County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 , after which it became part of Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. In the first Czechoslovak Republic, besides agriculture, handicrafts were well developed.

According to the 2011 census, 253 people lived in Trnovo, 245 of them Slovaks and one Ukrainian . Seven residents did not provide any information about their ethnicity .

105 residents committed to the Roman Catholic Church, 94 residents to the Evangelical Church AB, eight residents to the Greek Catholic Church, four residents to the Evangelical Methodist Church and two residents to the Orthodox Church. 25 residents had no denomination and the denomination of 15 residents was not determined.
