Žabokreky (Hungarian Zsámbokrét ) is a municipality in northern Slovakia with 1225 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), which belongs to the Okres Martin , part of the Žilinský kraj and is part of the traditional Turz landscape .
geography
The municipality is located in the Turčianska kotlina basin by the Beliansky potok , which is part of the Turiec river system . The town center is at an altitude of 426 m nm and is eight kilometers from Martin .
Neighboring municipalities of Žabokreky are Martin and Dražkovce in the north, Horný Kalník in the northeast, Belá-Dulice in the east, Necpaly in the southeast and Košťany nad Turcom in the south and west.
history
The place was first mentioned in writing in 1282 as Zabakrek and was created on an old trade route. The name is derived from the Slovak word for a frog (Slovak Sg. Žaba ); this amphibian is also shown in the coat of arms. In 1323 the village belonged to a certain Peter, son of Bitter, then briefly to the Neczpáli family and from 1396 to the 19th century to the Just family . In 1828 there were 31 houses and 198 inhabitants who were employed in forestry and as oil pressers and saffron processors.
The place in Turz County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 , after which it became part of Czechoslovakia and, when the country was partitioned in 1993, to Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, Žabokreky had 1,170 inhabitants, including 1,126 Slovaks, seven Czechs, four Russians, two Poles and one German and one Magyar each; one resident was of a different ethnicity. 32 residents gave no answer. 646 residents supported the Evangelical Church AB, 246 residents the Roman Catholic Church, six residents the Greek Catholic Church, five residents the Evangelical Methodist Church and one resident each to the Seventh-day Adventists and the Reformed Church; three residents were of other denominations. 201 residents had no denomination and 60 residents had no denomination.
