Turčianske Kľačany (until 1946 only "Kľačany"; Hungarian Vágkelecsény - until 1907 Klicsin and Klicsén ) is a municipality in northern Slovakia with 989 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), which belongs to Okres Martin , part of the Žilinský kraj and is part of the traditional landscape of the Turz .

The municipality is located in the northern part of the Turčianska kotlina basin at the foot of the Little Fatra in the north and is traversed by the Kľačiansky creek . The Krpeliansky kanál and the Waag flow immediately south of the village . The highest point is the mountain Kľačianska Magura at the upper end of the valley Kľačianska dolina , which measures 1367  m nm . The center of the village lies at an altitude of 410  m nm and is six kilometers from Vrútky and eleven kilometers from Martin (both road distances).

Neighboring municipalities are Lipovec in the west and north-west, Sučany in the east and south-east, Martin in the south and Vrútky in the south-west.

history

Turčianske Kľačany Church

The place was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1374 (other sources only mention goblets in 1403 ). It belonged to the estate of the Sklabiňa Castle , in the 18th and 19th centuries it belonged to the Révay family . Towards the end of the 15th century, Wallachian settlers were settled in the partly devastated village and were employed as craftsmen and seasonal workers. In 1828 there were 70 houses and 364 inhabitants.

The place in Turz County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 , after which it became part of Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, there were 888 inhabitants in Turčianske Kľačany, of whom 835 were Slovaks, six Czechs, two each from Poland and Russia and one Magyar; eight residents stated a different ethnic group. 34 residents gave no information in this regard. 404 residents supported the Evangelical Church AB, 208 residents the Roman Catholic Church, eight residents the Evangelical Methodist Church, seven residents the Greek Catholic Church, five residents the Congregational Church and one resident each for the Orthodox Church, the Reformed Church and to the Czechoslovak-Hussite Church; six residents professed a different denomination. 175 inhabitants had no denomination and the denomination of 72 inhabitants was not determined.
