Podhradie (Hungarian Szucsányváralja - until 1907 Podhrágy ) is a municipality in northern Slovakia with 666 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), which belongs to Okres Martin , part of Žilinský kraj , and is part of the traditional Turiec landscape .
geography
The municipality is located in the north-eastern part of the torrent basin (Slovak Turčianska kotlina ) at the foot of the Great Fatra on the Podhradský creek in the catchment area of the Waag . The municipality covers the valley of the Podhradský potok up to the main ridge of the Great Fatra on the mountain Kľak ( 1394 m nm ). The center of the village lies at an altitude of 500 m nm and is 14 kilometers away from Martin .
Administratively, the municipality is divided into the main town Podhradie and the district Konské (incorporated in 1991).
Neighboring municipalities are Turany in the north, Nolčovo in the north-east, Ľubochňa in the east, Sklabinský Podzámok in the south and Turčianska Štiavnička in the west.
history
The place was first mentioned in writing in 1430 as Podhrady . The village was part of the Sučany rulership and was owned by the Nyáry family until the 19th century . In 1715 there were 23 households in Podhradie, in 1785 the village had 76 houses and 430 inhabitants, in 1828 there were 63 houses and 367 inhabitants who were employed as farmers, forest workers and weavers.
The place in Turz County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 , after which it became part of Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. In the first Czechoslovak Republic, the population stayed with traditional main sources of income. A fire in 1957 caused great damage in Podhradie.

According to the 2011 census, there were 669 inhabitants in Podhradie, 660 of them Slovaks and one Magyar and one inhabitant of another ethnic group. Seven residents did not provide any information about their ethnicity .
424 residents committed to the Evangelical Church AB, 94 residents to the Roman Catholic Church, eight residents to another denomination, three residents to the Evangelical Methodist Church, two residents each to the Greek Catholic Church and the Czechoslovak Hussite Church and one resident each Jehovah's Witnesses and the Reformed Church. 65 inhabitants were without a denomination and the denomination was not determined for 69 inhabitants.
