Socovce (Hungarian Szocóc - until 1907 Nagyszocóc ) is a municipality in northern Slovakia with 237 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), which belongs to the Okres Martin , part of the Žilinský kraj and is part of the traditional Turiec landscape .
geography
The municipality is located in the central part of the torrent basin (Slovak Turčianska kotlina ) on the brook Socovský potok and on the right bank of the Turiec . The town center is at an altitude of 444 m nm and is 16 kilometers from Martin .
The formerly independent villages Svätá Mara (incorporated in 1944) and Stránka (incorporated into the Svätá Mara community after 1873) also belong to the municipality. Both are no longer part of the community.
Neighboring communities are Kláštor pod Znievom in the north, Laskár in the northeast, Blatnica in the east, Mošovce in the south, Blažovce in the southwest and Turčiansky Ďur in the west.
history
On the nearby Stráža hill , there was a fortified settlement of the Lusatian culture in the Bronze Age .
The current place was first mentioned in writing in 1258 as Zochowcz , Zoczowcz or Sochouch . In 1262 the village came under the rule of Zniev Castle , in the 18th century it belonged to the Chamber. In 1720 there were 18 households in Socovce, in 1784 the village had 28 houses and 210 inhabitants, in 1828 there were 24 houses and 215 inhabitants who were employed as farmers.
The place in Turz County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 , after which it became part of Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. In the first Czechoslovak Republic, basket-making and weaving were common alongside agriculture.

According to the 2011 census, Socovce had 244 residents, 228 Slovaks and one Czech . 15 residents did not provide any information on ethnicity .
198 residents professed to the Roman Catholic Church and 11 residents to the Evangelical Church AB. 19 residents were non-denominational and the denomination of 16 residents was not determined.
