Veľký Čepčín (Hungarian Nagycsepcsény - until 1895 Nagycsepcsén ) is a municipality in the north-center of Slovakia with 252 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is located in the Okres Turčianske Teplice , part of the Žilinský kraj and is part of the traditional Turiec landscape .
geography
The municipality is located in the southwestern part of the torrent between the Turiec and the Teplica brook . The built-up area is located at the confluence of the Čepčínsky potok and Žabín rivers . The center of the village is at an altitude of 470 m nm and is eight kilometers from Turčianske Teplice and 24 kilometers from Martin .
Neighboring municipalities are Ivančiná in the north, Malý Čepčín in the east, Turčianske Teplice in the southeast, Dubové in the south and Kaľamenová in the west.
history
Veľký Čepčín was first mentioned in writing in 1262 as Cheptsin . Other historical names include Shepcsin (1343), Cepchin or Chepchin (1359), Chepchen (1369), Nagyczepchyn (1534) and Nagy Cscheptschin, Slauice Welky Cseptzjn (1736). In 1383 the village was owned by the Vladár family , in 1663 the Sándor and Benedek families had estates in the village. In 1787 the village had 58 houses and 357 inhabitants, in 1828 there were 61 houses and 309 inhabitants who were employed as craftsmen and farmers.
The place in Turz County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. In the first Czechoslovak Republic, too, agriculture remained the main source of income for the population. Today some of the residents still work as farmers, others commute to work in Turčianske Teplice or Martin.

According to the 2011 census, Veľký Čepčín had 239 inhabitants, of whom 223 were Slovaks . 16 residents did not provide any information on ethnicity .
121 residents committed themselves to the Evangelical Church AB, 70 residents to the Roman Catholic Church and one resident each to the Christian communities and the Greek Catholic Church. 26 residents had no denomination and the denomination of 20 residents was not determined.
