Brieštie (until 1946 in Slovak "Briešťa"; German Bries - formerly Brießta or Brestenhay , Hungarian Berestyénfalva - until 1907 Brjesztya or older Briesztya ) is a municipality in central Slovakia west of Turčianske Teplice . It belonged to the so-called Hauerland .
geography
The place is located two kilometers northwest of Slovenské Pravno ( Windischprobe ) at an altitude of 580 m and covers an area of 11,175 km². Bries consists of the main town Brieštie and Hadviga ( Hedwig / Hedwigsau ), which was incorporated in 1954 .
population
According to the last census in 2001, 25 people (14.71%) still profess to be Germans.
history
The village was first mentioned in writing as Beryssth in 1392 . In 1715 there were 11 dwellings, in 1785 already 21 houses with 177 inhabitants and in 1828 26 houses with 132 inhabitants.
Until 1945, the place was predominantly inhabited by German-born residents. In 1910 there were 352 inhabitants, in 1930 there were 357 inhabitants, 256 of whom claimed to be German (in Hadviga 465 inhabitants and 458 people of German origin).
Due to the poor soil and the associated poor income opportunities, the municipality was one of the poorest in the ČSR .
