Veľké Pole (German Hochwies or Hochwiesen , Hungarian Pálosnagymező - until 1882 Velkapola ) is a municipality in Okres Žarnovica in western central Slovakia .
It is about 15 kilometers from the city Partizánske and 15 to 20 kilometers from the town Žarnovica away and is located on a ridge between the Tribeč (Tríbeč) and the bird Mountains (Vtáčnik). Until 1945 the place was the center of the southernmost and at the same time smallest German language island in the Hauerland . Not far from Veľké Pole are the ruins of Brezová (Eng. Birch grove or plaza) an abandoned settlement of the Carpathian Germans , which was settled as a scattered settlement from Veľké Pole and Veľké Uherce .
history
The place was first mentioned in writing as de Prato in 1332 . In 1663 a Turkish invasion was successfully repulsed. The traces of an approximately 1 km long defensive hill along the western side of the village are still visible today. In recognition of the successful resistance against the Turks, Emperor Leopold I. Hochwies granted market rights in 1667. A large part of the population emigrated in the 19th century. With the end of the Second World War and the expulsion of the Carpathian Germans, the language island finally disappears.
