Veľká Lehota (until 1927 "Veľká Lehôta" in Slovak; German Großhau or Großhay , Hungarian Nagyülés - until 1888 Nagylehota ) is a municipality in central Slovakia .
It is located northwest of the town of Nová Baňa in the Pohronský Inovec mountains between the mountains Vojšín (819 m), Veľký Inovec (901 m) and Háj (616 m) at an altitude of 576 m above sea level. The community is surrounded by oak and beech forests. It has 1350 inhabitants.
history
The place was founded at the time of Matthäus Csák near a Benedictine abbey . It was first mentioned in the founding document of the town of Nová Baňa issued by Ludwig I in 1345 as "Nova plantaio". In 1424 Veľká Lehota was given away together with Malá Lehota by the then King of Hungary and Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire Sigismund as belonging to the Hrušov Castle . This affiliation also results from documents from the years 1467, 1468 and 1504. Later the village belonged to the rule of the owners of the Topoľčianky chateau .
In 1780 a chapel was built, which in 1809 was expanded into a church dedicated to Saint Martin . At the same time the rectory and the neighboring Catholic elementary school were built. A state elementary school was not established until 1927/1928. Between 1925 and 1938 there was an emigration, with the emigrated residents often returning later.
