history
The city name has a linguistic relationship to the word žarnov , in German millstone ; a place where the production of grinding courses could take place has not been proven to be decisive. However, this tool can be seen stylized on the city arms. The city was first mentioned in writing as Zanog or Zirnog in 1332–1337 . A few years later a toll booth was moved from Voznica to the city; Until 1479 the town was in the dominion of the Revište Castle , after which it came to the Dóczy family .
In 1563 Žarnovica was mentioned as a town and during the rule of the Dóczy there were county assemblies here. In 1647 and 1664, however, it was devastated by the Ottomans, in the second year mentioned a battle took place near the place in which they were fought by an imperial army (commanded by Jean-Louis Raduit de Souches ). In the late 17th century the town received market rights and some guilds (e.g. shoemakers) are documented.
In 1828 there were 140 houses and 986 inhabitants. At the end of the 19th century, wood processing and brickwork became the most important employers; however, the brewery and the surrounding huts were closed.
Until 1918, the city in Bars County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.
