Scharnowitz Castle

The ruins of Scharnowitz Castle (actually German Rewitz or Rewisch , Slovak Hrad Revište , Hungarian Revistye ) are located in the Scharnowitz district in the Banská Bystrica (Neusohl) region, Slovakia . The castle is located above the right bank of the Gran River .

history

The hilltop castle probably dates from the second half of the 13th century, when it was built together with Sachsenstein Castle on the opposite side of the Gran. Its importance was to protect the narrow passage that led to the central Slovak mining towns. In 1331 the castle was mentioned for the first time in written sources. At that time it was a royal property.

In 1391, King Sigismund of the House of Luxembourg gave her to Ladislav from Šárovce as a fief. In the first half of the 15th century a garrison of Johann Giskras occupied the complex. Since the end of the 15th century it belonged to the noble Dóci family. The castle was destroyed by Emmerich Thököly during the uprising . At the end of the 18th century it was abandoned and fell into disrepair.

description

The castle was built on a narrow rocky ridge. The narrow, elongated castle courtyard extends over 50 meters and is closed on the north side by a prismatic residential tower . A curtain wall bordered the courtyard . The entrance was on the south side. At the end of the 19th century, the greater part of the curtain wall and the residential building collapsed. In 2003 the outer wall of the outer bailey also collapsed.
