The Okres Žarnovica is an administrative unit in the central slovakia square kilometers with 26,112 inhabitants (31 December 2019) and an area of 426th It is located at the southern end of the Žiarska kotlina basin and includes the narrow valley of the Hron to the breakthrough valley Slovenská brána in the south, between the Pohronský Inovec and Vtáčnik mountains to the west and the Schemnitzer mountains east of the river.
Historically, the district is mostly in the former Bars county , a small part in the east east of the place Hodruša-Hámre belongs to the former Hont county (see also the list of historical counties in Hungary ).
