Brehy (German Hochstätten , Hochstein or Hohenmaut , Hungarian Magasmart - until 1898 Magosmart - older Magospart ) is a municipality in central Slovakia with 1040 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019), which belongs to the Okres Žarnovica , a district of the Banskobystrický kraj .
geography
The municipality is located in the narrow valley of the Hron (German Gran ) at the confluence with the Obecný creek , between the mountains Štiavnické vrchy in the east and Pohronský Inovec in the west. The center of the village lies at an altitude of 221 m nm and is only three kilometers from Nová Baňa .
history
The place was first mentioned in writing in 1283 as Mogosmorth and was initially a village belonging to nobles, before it was donated to the St. Elisabeth Hospital in neighboring Königsberg (now Nová Baňa in Slovak) in 1391. Later the place belonged to the city of Königsberg. There were once silver and gold mines in the municipality.
Agriculture as an occupation was rather limited, but in contrast, crafts and pottery were more common. Nevertheless, many residents commuted to work in the Levice and Nové Zámky area , and after 1945 also in all of Czechoslovakia.
From 1976 to 1995 Brehy was part of the town of Nová Baňa.
