Thomas F. Monteleone

Thomas Francis Monteleone (born April 14, 1946 in Baltimore , Maryland ) is an American horror and science fiction writer.

Life

After attending a Jesuit high school , Monteleone studied at the University of Maryland in College Park , where he graduated in 1968 with a bachelor's degree in psychology and in 1973 with a master's degree in English. After graduating, he worked as a psychotherapist at CT Perkins Hospital in Jessup , Maryland from 1969 to 1978 . From 1976 to 1978 he was managing director of Science Fiction Writers of America . Since then he has been a full-time writer.

Monteleone has been active in science fiction since 1972 when he began writing book reviews for Amazing Stories . In 1973 the short story Wendigo's Child appeared in the anthology Monster Tales edited by Roger Elwood . The publication history of his debut novel Seeds of Change (1975) was double-edged to unfortunate. It was the first volume in Laser Books , a series of SF books launched by Harlequin Books that was produced in very large print runs and distributed free for promotional purposes, flooding the market and giving Seeds of Change a reputation for not even reading the book could give away. His other SF novels, including the Dragonstar cycle written together with David Bischoff , are considered standard dystopias or rather conventional SF adventures.

The reception of Monteleone's works in the horror genre was much cheaper. The novel The Blood of the Lamb (1992, German Das Blut des Lammes ), in which the protagonist Father Peter Carenza is a clone whose DNA had been extracted from the Turin shroud , and which - endowed with the miraculous powers of Christ - even turns itself does not behave according to the expectations of its creators, was awarded the Bram Stoker Award in 1993, the most prestigious prize in the field of horror and dark fantasy .

The series of Borderland Anthologies published by Monteleone , which has been compared to Harlan Ellison's Dangerous Visions , was also very well received, insofar as the boundaries of the genre are tested and expanded here too. This was recognized with two more Bram Stoker Awards . He also received a Bram Stoker Award in 2004 for The Mothers And Fathers Italian Association's column in Cemetery Dance magazine . Monteleone also wrote scripts for one episode each of the television series Night Visions and Tales from the Darkside .

Monteleone has a son with his first wife, Natalie, whom he married in 1969. The marriage ended in divorce in 1973. In 1981 he married Linda Smith, with whom he had a second son. He currently resides in New Hampshire with his third wife Elizabeth and daughter Olivia . Elizabeth E. Monteleone was the co-editor on two of the Borderland anthologies and is the co-author of a short story. Olivia F. Monteleone is co-editor of the anthology Borderland 6 .
