Mythopoeic Award
The Mythopoeic Award is a literary prize that has been awarded since 1971 for English-language works from the field of fantasy . The focus is on high fantasy in the manner of JRR Tolkien and the other authors known as Inklings , in addition to Tolkien, namely CS Lewis , Charles Williams and Owen Barfield . The name Mythopoeic Award refers to Mythopoesis , that is, the creation of myths as a literary element, which is particularly characteristic of the works of Tolkien.
The award is presented by the Mythopoeic Society , an international literary-scientific association based in Wichita , Kansas . Works to be awarded are nominated by members of the Mythopoeic Society and the winners are chosen by a committee consisting of members. The awards are presented at Mythcon , the Mythopoeic Society's annual meeting in July or August .
Categories
The prizes are awarded in four categories, namely:
- Adult Literature : Fantasy novels or collections published in the previous year in the spirit of the Inklings. Finalists can also be awarded in the following year. Individual volumes of a cycle can be awarded if they are self-contained, or in the year after the publication of the last volume of a cycle this can be awarded as a whole.
- Children's Literature : Fantasy for children and young people up to 13 years of age in the tradition of the Hobbit and the Chronicles of Narnia . Otherwise, the same rules apply as for adult literature .
- Inklings Studies : secondary literature dealing with the Inklings, their works and their literary environment. The work must have appeared in the last three years.
- Myth and Fantasy Studies : Mythological and folklore monographs, literary and historical works on fantasy and fantasy, fantastic literature. The work must have appeared in the last three years.
Before 1992, awards were mostly made annually in the categories Fantasy (-Roman) and Scholarship / Inklings . Scholarship / Inklings largely corresponded to the current Inklings Studies category , but was awarded several times not for specific works, but to people who have earned merit in the field of Inkling research.
In addition, the Alexei Kondratiev Award has been presented since 2010 for student work in the field of Inklings / Myth and Fantasy Studies .
