Although Walton has been writing since she was 13, her first novel wasn't published until 2000. She previously wrote a number of articles in role-playing publications such as Pyramid Magazine , most of them with her then-husband, Ken Walton. Walton was active in online science fiction fandom , especially in the Usenet forums rec.arts.sf.written and rec.arts.sf.fandom . Her poem The Lurkers Support Me in E-Mail has been quoted and commented on in many discussions, often without her name being mentioned. Her first three novels, The King's Peace (2000), The King's Name (2001) and The Prize in the Game (2002) were from the field of fantasy . They all played in a world based on the Kingdom of King Arthur and Táin Bó Cúailnges Ireland . Her next novel Tooth and Claw (2003) was designed as if it could have been written by the Victorian novelist Anthony Trollope , but about dragons rather than people.

Farthing was her first science fiction novel. In doing so, she mixed the form of the cozy mystery with the SF sub-genre of the alternative history , in which Great Britain made peace with Adolf Hitler before the United States entered World War II . The novel was nominated for the Nebula Award , the Quill Award, and the John W. Campbell Memorial Award for Best Science Fiction Novel, and the Sidewise Award for Alternate History . A sequel, entitled Ha'penny , was released by Tor Books in October 2007 . In September 2008, the third part of this trilogy followed with Half a Crown . Ha'penny won the Prometheus Award in 2008 (together with Harry Turtledove's novel The Gladiator ) and was nominated for the Lambda Literary Award .

Walton has been writing a column for Tor.com since 2008 , mostly book reviews of earlier works.
