Sidewise Award

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Sidewise Award for Alternate History was created in 1996 to honor the best novels and stories in the field of alternative history every year .

The name of the award comes from the short story Sidewise in Time by Murray Leinster , published in 1934 , in which a strange storm causes different parts of the world to swap places with their equivalents from other timelines.

The founders of the award were Robert Schmunk , Evelyn Leeper and Steven H Silver , who are currently judges. Over the years, the jury has been expanded to eight people (including from Great Britain and South Africa ).

Every year two prizes are presented at Worldcon , The Short Form Award applies to works less than 60,000 words in length, while The Long Form Award applies to works over 60,000 words in length (regardless of whether they are individual works or entire series) . It is within the discretion of the judges to honor a person or a work with the Special Achievement Award ; here, what appeared before the introduction of the Sidewise Awards can be recognized . Works that were published in the previous year are honored.
