Paul McAuley (born April 23, 1955 in Stroud ( Gloucestershire ), Great Britain ) is a British science fiction writer.

Life

A biologist himself, McAuley mainly writes so-called Hard-SF , which deals with topics such as biotechnology , alternative history and space travel.

Initially he wrote space operas set in the distant future, such as Red Dust (about a Mars colonized by the Chinese) and the novel Fairyland, which received the John W. Campbell Memorial Award and the Arthur C. Clarke Award . The latter describes a dystopia in which genetically modified “dolls” based on human DNA are used as easily dispensable slaves.

With his first work Four Hundred Billion Stars he won the Philip K. Dick Award , with The Temptation of Dr. Stein received the British Fantasy Award and, with Pasquale's Angel, the Sidewise Award for Alternate History .
