Michael Swanwick (* 18th November 1950 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania ) is an American fantasy - and science fiction - writers .

Life

Swanwick published his first works in the early 1980s. In his novel, Die Todesschneise , Swanwick portrays the aftermath of an incident even worse than that of Harrisburg at the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant ; In vacuum flowers he draws a picture of humanity that has congealed into "inclusion", a centrally controlled cybernetic collective being; In times of flood , the protagonist is a bureaucrat who is only called “the bureaucrat” throughout the book. With the help of his briefcase he hunts a magician who uses “forbidden technology”. In The Daughter of the Steel Dragon , Swanwick describes a world in which the elves wear Armani fashions and dragons are cybernetic flying machines, and pilots can couple themselves with the dragon's consciousness; Jack Faust is an adaptation of Faust using modern technology and science.

During the Flood , the Nebula won best novel in 1991. Many of his short stories have also been recognized: He won the Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award for The Edge of the World in 1989, the World Fantasy Award for Radio Waves 1996, and the Hugo Award for several times The Very Pulse of the Machine 1999, Scherzo with Tyrannosaur 2000, The Dog Said Bow-Wow 2002, Slow Life 2003, and Legions in Time 2004. In 2008 he received the Locus Award for A Small Room in Koboldtown , and in 2002 for Being Gardner Dozois and 2001 for Tales of Old Earth . He won the Asimov's Reader Poll several times.

Swanwick has also written nonfiction books on both of his literary genres. He wrote The User's Guide to the Postmoderns in 1986 on the current state of science fiction and In the Tradition ... in 1994 on the field of fantasy. The first work is not entirely uncontroversial because it sorted new SF authors into the categories " Cyberpunk " and "Literary Humanists". In 1997, both books were combined in The Postmodern Archipelago . In 2001 Swanwick published a book-filling interview with Gardner Dozois entitled Being Gardner Dozois .
