Kim Newman (born July 31, 1959 in London , Great Britain ) is a British film critic, journalist and writer of the horror genre . He also publishes under the pseudonym Jack Yeovil .

Life

Although born in London, Newman grew up in the countryside, the tiny village of Aller in Somerset . He attended school in Bridgwater (later he writes about his school days in the fictional "Sedgwater") and was active in the local theater group. Newman wrote his first novel when he was fifteen out of an interest in everything that was fantastic and scary. He studied English literature at the University of Sussex from 1980 and made a name for himself as a film and literary critic; first stories appeared in magazines such as Interzone . After graduating, he worked as a journalist for various London newspapers such as the weekly City Limits and the porn magazine Knave . His first success was in 1985 Ghastly Beyond Belief: The Science Fiction and Fantasy Book of Quotations , written together with Neil Gaiman , in which the two authors devoted themselves lovingly and ironically to the bad style of successful genre books; it was followed by a serious non-fiction book on the history of horror films. The first novel was published in 1989.
