Randall Garrett

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Randall Garrett (born December 16, 1927 in Lexington (Missouri) , † December 31, 1987 in Waco ; actually Gordon Randall Phillip David Garrett ) was an American science fiction and fantasy author.

Life

Garrett was born on December 16, 1927 in Lexington, Missouri, United States. He studied science at Texas Tech University in Lubbock , graduating with a bachelor's degree . After a brief interlude with the US Marine Corps , he worked for some time as an industrial chemist in industry in Michigan and Illinois. In 1955 he moved to New York and built up a life as a freelance writer.

Since 1951 he has been writing very successfully for almost all American SF magazines, partly alone, partly together with authors such as Robert Silverberg , Harlan Ellison and Laurence M. Janifer . For several years he was one of the main writers of Astounding Magazine (two issues even included all of his articles).

Garrett used a wide variety of pseudonyms , including Gordon Aghill , David Gordon , Darrell T. Langart , Johnathan Blake MacKenzie , Jonathan Blake MacKenzie , Johnathan Blake Mac Kenzie , Gerald Vance , Robert Randall (together with Robert Silverberg) and Mark Phillips (together with Laurence M. Janifer ).

His father died in the early 1960s. He stopped writing for years and moved back to his childhood home in Texas. It was here that he met his first wife and moved with her to California a short time later. The marriage ended in divorce in 1963. Some time later he moved in with the writer Vicki Ann Heydron . Inspired by her, he began to write again. On December 25, 1978, the two married and planned to write a long fantasy series together called Gandalara .

In May 1979, however, he contracted encephalitis , from which he never recovered: the disease led to permanent memory loss. His wife moved him to live with his brother in Texas, where his condition continued to deteriorate. Randall Garett had been in a care facility in Waco since August 1981. On December 31, 1987, he died of pneumonia.

During the time wrote of his illness Vicki Ann Heydron by Garrett exposés several Gandalara novels that appeared under both names.

In 1999, Randall Garrett posthumously received the Sidewise Award in the Special Achievement Award category for his Lord Darcy series .
