Prometheus Award
The Prometheus Award is a literary prize that honors libertarian works from the field of science fiction .
history
The Prometheus Award was established in 1979 by L. Neil Smith . The first prize winner was F. Paul Wilson with his novel Wheels Within Wheels . The prize was a gold medal valued at around $ 2,500. Because of the high costs and the lack of a financial and organizational backbone, the event was put on hold for two years after the first time.
In 1982 the Libertarian Futurist Society was founded, which revived the Prometheus Award. In addition to a category for the best novel , a hall of fame was also established a year later to honor classic libertarian works.
In both categories a gold medal is awarded, one side of which is supposed to represent free trade and the other side the free spirit. The medal for the best novel originally weighed half an ounce , and since 2001 a whole ounce . The medal for the Hall of Fame weighs an eighth of an ounce.
