Lois McMaster Bujold
Lois McMaster Bujold Joy (born 2 November 1949 in Columbus ( Ohio 's)) is a US-American author of science fiction - and fantasy books .
Life
Bujold studied from 1968 to 1972 at Ohio State University in Columbus . Since 1969 she was part of the science fiction fandom , where she also met John Fredric Bujold, whom she married in 1971 and with whom she has a daughter and a son. She began writing in 1982 and published her first short story in 1985, which became the basis for an episode of George A. Romero's television series Tales from the Darkside ( Barter , season 4, episode 19, 1988). In 1986 the first three novels of the Vorkosigan saga followed , which were published by Baen Books .
Bujold is divorced and lives in Minnesota .

Her books prove Bujold's mastery of the diverse science fiction genre. Earlier titles mainly follow the space opera tradition (also known as military science fiction ), with a lot of battles, conspiracies and surprising twists and turns. However, she only apparently follows the clichés of the genre .
Her best-known work is the Vorkosigan saga , which is set around 1,000 years in the future . The protagonist Miles Vorkosigan is an interstellar spy and mercenary admiral from the planet Barrayar . Miles Vorkosigan is handicapped by short stature and very brittle bones - the result of an attack on his mother while she was pregnant with him. The novels show how he fights prejudice, senseless violence, stupidity and his own weaknesses with intelligence, courage and humanity and (of course) wins in the end.
A central theme that appears again and again in her novels are relationships of all kinds. Be it the love between normal and genetically modified people (The Quaddies of Cay Habitat), the love between enemies (Shards of Honor), homosexuality (Ethan of Athos) or even the tendency of short men (like Miles Vorkosigan) to grow tall Women. While happy endings are often common, there is no pretense that this type of relationship is the real deal or even normal for everyone. Instead, she simply portrays these idiosyncrasies of her protagonists without prejudice, but adorable, and in this way advocates more tolerance.
She has won the prestigious Hugo Award for best novel four times (breaking Robert Heinlein's record ). She has received the Nebula Award twice for best novel. For her short novel The Mountains of Mourning and the novel Paladin of Souls she even received both prizes and the Locus Award .
