HOMer Award

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The HOMer Award was a literary prize that was awarded from 1991 to 2001 for works in the field of science fiction . Fantasy and horror novels also received awards in the first two years . From 1996 onwards, prizes were also awarded in a category for SF films and series episodes.

The prize was awarded by the participants in the science fiction and fantasy forum on CompuServe , after which the prize was also named - the forum Home and Hobby Forum Number 9 was selected using the abbreviation HOM-9 , which is why the participants call themselves "Homers" called. With a number of participants ranging between 18,000 and 40,000, the HOMer Awards were the audience award with the broadest base in their time . During the award ceremony, it was criticized that the participation of award candidates in the forum discussions would have been too important. The winners were announced in Locus Magazine and the winners received a calligraphic certificate.

Awards were given in the following categories:

  • SF Novel: science fiction novel
  • Fantasy Novel: Fantasy novel
  • Horror Novel: horror novel
  • First novel: first novel
  • Novella: short novel
  • Novelette: narrative

Similar to the categories of the Nebula Awards , texts were assigned to the Novel , Novella , Novelette and Short Story categories based on the length of the text (number of words).
