SP Somtow
SP Somtow (actually Somtow Papinian Sucharitkul ; born December 30, 1952 ) is a Thai author , composer and film director . His dazzling demeanor and caustic humor have made him an international media personality.
Life
Somtow was born in Bangkok . His grandfather's sister was the Queen of Siam , his father is an internationally known lawyer and vice president of the International Academy of Human Rights . Somtow studied at Cambridge and Eton . He became known through music: in the 1970s (while still in college) his compositions were performed on four continents, and he himself was a representative of the Asian Composers League and UNESCO's International Music Commission. Somtow is the first composer to combine classical Thai with Western instruments (1975: "Views from the Golden Mountain"). These avant-garde compositions sparked controversy and scandals in his home country. Somtow started writing in the late 1970s. Under his leadership, a performance of was in January 2005, Mozart's Requiem at the called him to life Bangkok Opera place, in which one million baht for the victims of the tsunami are collected.
When he lived in the United States, he began writing science fiction novels in English, including the Mallworld , Inquestor and Aquila series . He later turned to the horror genre and wrote the novel Vampire Junction, the vampire of which shaped the classic image of the “rock'n'roll” vampire of the 80s. His other horror novels are about werewolves in the Wild West (Moon Dance) or zombies in the American Civil War (Darker Angels) . He also published two collections of short stories: Tagging the Moon - Fairy Tales of LA and The Pavilion of Frozen Women. Somtow was President of the Horror Writers Association from 1998 to 2000 .
Somtow, who speaks several languages (including German) ventured a few excursions into the film genre, directed the classic film The Laughing Dead and the award-winning film I'll Met by Moonlight .
