Jack Cady

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jack Andrew Cady (born March 20, 1932 in Columbus , Ohio , † January 14, 2004 in Port Townsend , Washington ) was an American author of science fiction , fantasy and horror novels, short stories and novels.

Life

Cady worked from 1952 for four years for the Coast Guard in Maine before he began studying at the University of Louisville , which he graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1961. He got by with various odd jobs, from auctioneers to truck drivers, which later provided the material for his stories. He typed his first (unpublished) novel on the bench of his truck with an old typewriter . The first success soon set in, and he won the Atlantic Monthly 'First' Award in 1965 for the short story The Burning . His first book The Burning & Other Stories , published in 1972, contains this short story and others that have already been published in renowned American anthologies .

Cady did not actually make writing his profession until 1974 when he moved to Washington and accepted a position as a creative writing teacher at the University of Washington . He taught this subject at several universities across the United States before returning to Washington at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma , where he taught until his retirement in 1992.

Cady was never a comfortable writer, covering a wide variety of subjects and genres, and despite his class, could not achieve consistent commercial success. Even so, he remained productive until his death and published seven books with four different publishers in the last decade alone.

In his private life, Cady was married twice, his second marriage to the author Carol Orlock, and had four children from his first marriage.
