Jack McDevitt (* 1935 in Philadelphia , USA ) is an American science fiction author.

Life

Jack McDevitt (actually John Charles McDevitt) was born in Philadelphia in 1935. He received a BA from LaSalle College in 1957 . During his college days, he took part in the literature competition Freshman Short Story Contest , which he could win with his contribution; the short story he submitted was published in the school's literary magazine Four Quarters . Actually, he was already on his way to becoming a writer, but as McDevitt stated in an interview, after reading Charles Dickens ' novel David Copperfield, he realized that he could not reach this level and that he should do something else. He worked as a taxi driver and as a motivational speaker. From 1958 to 1962 he served in the US Navy . After that he worked as an English teacher. In 1967 he married Maureen McAdams. In 1971 he was awarded a Masters Degree in Literature from Wesleyan University . Jack McDevitt worked for the US Customs Service from 1975 until his retirement in 1995.

After a quarter of a century of complete abstinence from writing, McDevitt began writing again in 1980 at the suggestion of his wife. His first SF short story "The Emerson Effect" was published in Twilight Zone Magazine a year later . His debut novel Erstkontakt is about the first encounter with an extraterrestrial civilization. McDevitt takes up this theme again and again in later works.

Since his retirement he has become much more active as a writer and has had a number of successes. With one exception, one of his short stories or novels has been nominated for the Nebula Award every year for a period of over ten years . In 2015 he received the Robert A. Heinlein Award in recognition of his work in science fiction with over 21 novels and 81 short stories. In 2016 an asteroid was named after him: (328305) Jackmcdevitt .

Jack McDevitt has three grown-up children and now lives with his wife on St. Simons Island (Georgia) .

A huge statue of an extraterrestrial being is found on Saturn's moon Iapetus, the inscription of which defies all attempts at decryption. After the development of the super-light drive, further relics are found, each on worlds that have been plagued by cosmic catastrophes. But there is not much time left to decipher the riddle, because the earth itself is on the verge of ecological collapse and there is hardly any money left for research ...
