Robert J. Sawyer (born April 29, 1960 in Ottawa , Ontario ) is a Canadian science fiction author.

He describes himself as a hard science fiction writer, but is more concerned about characterization and human psychology than many other representatives of this subgenre. His narratives often deal with Arthur C. Clarke- style metaphysics and philosophy; he sees science fiction as the literature of ideas. The television series FlashForward is based on Sawyer's novel of the same name from 1999.
