Aurora Award

The Aurora Award ( French Prix ​​Aurora ) is a Canadian literary prize that has been awarded since 1980 for works from the fields of science fiction and fantasy . The prize is awarded annually in various categories at Canvention , the most important Canadian science fiction convention by the Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Association (CSFFA).

The award was first given in 1980 to the Canadian SF author Alfred Elton van Vogt as the Coeurl Award (named after one of van Vogt's monsters). From 1986 to 1990 the award was known by the Canadian Science Fiction Professional Association (CASPA) as the Casper Award or Prix ​​Casper , officially also as the Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Achievement Award or the CSFFA Award . From 1991, Aurora Award became the official name. Since 2011, the prize in the French-speaking categories has been combined with the Prix ​​Boréal to form the Prix ​​Aurora-Boréal .

Initially, between 1980 and 1983, the prize was awarded to one author for his life's work. Suspended in 1984 and awarded to Eileen Kernaghan in 1985 for Songs from the Drowned Land , there were three categories from 1986 to 1988, namely for English-language and French-language works, and one for fan activities or services. From 1989 there were the following categories:

Lifetime achievement prizes were awarded irregularly after 1983. In 2018, several authors were inducted into the Canadian Science Fiction Hall of Fame for the first time , the hall of fame for Canadian science fiction. In 2016 Robert J. Sawyer's novel The Neanderthal Parallax was named Best of the Decade , the best novel of the decade.
