Alfred Elton van Vogt - often abbreviated as AE van Vogt - (born April 26, 1912 in Winnipeg , Manitoba , † January 26, 2000 in Hollywood , California ) was an American science fiction writer of Canadian origin.

Life

Van Vogt, who had never studied, had various jobs and began to write on the side. First he wrote radio plays, melodramatic short stories and detective novels. With A Miracle in My Life , he won a $ 1,000 award from True Story Magazine in 1935 . His first science fiction short story Black Destroyer appeared in SF magazine Astounding Science Fiction in July 1939 . Thanks to the good collaboration with the publisher John W. Campbell , van Vogt was able to publish various short stories and novels.

Van Vogt married Edna Mayne Hull († 1975) in 1939 . The two settled in Hollywood ( USA ) in 1944 . Van Vogt became a US citizen in 1952. After the death of his first wife in 1975, he married Lydia Brayman in 1979. He fell ill with Alzheimer's in the 1990s and died on January 26, 2000 in Hollywood at the age of 87.

Van Vogt's works are mostly characterized by the struggle of intellectually superior loners who, through mutation or the like, have developed parapsychic abilities up to superhuman so-called “super powers” and who have been cast out as foreign bodies by society. His first great success was the novel Slan (1940). He formed one of the foundations for the salvation movement of Dianetics , which L. Ron Hubbard , who was a friend of Van Vogt at the time , brought into being in the USA in the early 1950s.

After the Second World War , Van Vogt turned to new topics. He was particularly interested in the idea of interdisciplinary knowledge systems. The characters of his first SF short story Black Destroyer already use such a system, called nexialism , in which branches of science are networked in order to analyze the behavior of aliens . Van Vogt began to study Alfred Korzybski's general semantics . He then wrote two novels in which he dealt with these topics: The World of Ā and The Players of Ā in the late 1940s, followed by a late work Ā Three in the early 1980s. Ā , Null-A or non- Aristotelian logic refers to the ability to use intuitive, independent understanding as opposed to the blind application of learned deductive logic.

As a co-author (together with Charles Edward Cooke) he worked on the non-fiction book The Hypnotism Handbook in 1956 , a guide to hypnosis techniques. As Hubbard was building his Scientology sect, van Vogt gradually distanced himself from him and the organization. At the end of the 1950s he turned back to the SF, but could no longer build on his earlier successes, at least in the USA.

Van Vogt also influenced information about totalitarian systems that developed in Europe and Asia after the Second World War. He wrote the propaganda novel The Violent Man (1962), which in revolutionary China plays this time and brainwash ( brainwashing theme). According to him, he read more than 100 works on China while researching this book.

The episode Ungeheuer ab Bord ( Discord in Scarlet ) from the novel Space Expedition of the Space Beagle served as a template for the film Alien - The uncanny creature from an alien world ( Ridley Scott , 1979). Van Vogt began litigation in the 1980s and was awarded $ 50,000 in a settlement.
