Hans Söllner (2017)

Hans Söllner (* 24. December 1955 in Bad Reichenhall as Johann Michael Söllner ) is a German singer-songwriter . He is known musically for his biting songs, which he performs solo with guitar and harmonica . In addition, he also plays “Bavarian reggae ” with his bands.

Söllner writes texts that are critical of society and the system, especially those critical of the CSU, in Bavarian dialect and advocates the legalization of marijuana . Numerous police and judicial proceedings ran against him, among other things because of possession of narcotics , insulting and using symbols of unconstitutional organizations .

As a Rastafarian , he unsuccessfully sued the Federal Administrative Court for the use of cannabis for religious reasons . It dismissed the lawsuit on the grounds that there was no public interest.

In March 2020, Söllner ran for the office of Lord Mayor of Bad Reichenhall . He received 640 votes, which corresponds to a result of 8.4%.

Life

Hans Söllner (1995)

Hans Söllner was born on Christmas Eve 1955 as the son of Johann and Therese Söllner in Bad Reichenhall . When he was three he went to the Catholic kindergarten in Bad Reichenhall, St. Zeno . From 1961 to 1970 Söllner attended secondary school in Bad Reichenhall. From the age of ten to fourteen he was a member of the Marzoll costume association and eventually had to leave it because his hair was too long. At the age of 15 he began an apprenticeship as a chef and successfully completed it after three years. After a year of unemployment, he had to start his military service in Füssen . After three months of basic training , he was able to start his civilian service in Weilheim as a recognized conscientious objector , which he finished after 16 months.

Between the ages of 15 and 18, Söllner taught himself to play the guitar. He then moved to Munich and was unemployed there for another two years. During this time he wrote his first song Finally a Work . He then completed an apprenticeship as a car mechanic , which he successfully completed. During his apprenticeship at vocational school, he composed all the titles for his debut LP. After he had spent years “learning four fingerings” on a given guitar , he began to sing along with his “mediocre guitar playing just as mediocre”.

Musical career

1979 to 1989

Söllner made his first appearance in 1979 on the then Munich cabaret Robinson. Three years later he took first place in a singing competition in Traunstein . As a result, he was able to release his first album Finally a work on the independent label PPM (Powerplay Music Records) in 1983 . Söllner also published the albums Für Marianne und Ludwig (1986) and Wos rhymes se scho auf Nicki (1987) at PPM .

In 1988 Söllner PPM moved to the Munich independent label Trikont. His first album on Trikont was Hey Staat! , one of his most successful albums to date. Around the same time Söllner founded a reggae band with Bavarian lyrics with the Munich guitarist Peter Schneider. In the summer of 1989 they recorded the studio album Bayerman Vibration . The album was released in February 1990 on Schneider's United Sounds label and was a success. Soon the organizers of the Reggae Sunsplash Festival hired Söllner and the band Bayerman Vibration to perform.

His texts, often critical of the state and society, made Söllner known to the police early on. His relationship with the rule of law deteriorated particularly sharply after his first vacation in Jamaica in 1986. After his stay in the homeland of reggae, he devoted himself to the struggle for the legalization of marijuana .

1990 to 1999

After the success of Bayerman Vibration , Söllner toured regularly with his band through Germany and Austria between 1990 and 1995. In 1991 the album Live! ; no longer issued today it became a rarity. In 1992 Söllner released the album ... der Charlie , which alongside Hey Staat! is probably his most successful album.

In August 1993 Söllner resigned from the Roman Catholic Church. He decided to switch to the Rastafarian faith . Since then he has lived as a vegetarian and pacifist . In 1995 Söllner released the album Grea Göib Roud , a studio album dedicated to a deceased friend. In 1997, A jeda was another successful studio album. In 1998 Trikont Söllner's first three albums were finally a work , Für Marianne und Ludwig and Wos, se scho rhymes with Nicki in revised new editions, as these were no longer available after the expiry of his old label PPM.

From 2000

Hans Söllner (2005)

In 2000 the album 241255 was released , titled after Söllner's date of birth, which contained live recordings from recent years. In 2001 Söllner released the live album Babylon , the first with his new backing band Bayaman 'Sissdem. After several member changes, the band has consisted of Manfred Puchner (guitar), Clemens Pichler (bass), Peter Pichler (accordion), Stephan Hofer (drums), Stefan Zepf (keyboard and organ), and Stefan Brodte (percussion) since 2009.

In 2005, Söllner published his first self-written book, Bloß a Gschicht . It is a fiction based on his views in Bavarian and High German. The "translation" into High German was done by Franz Dobler . The studio album Oiwei I, recorded with Bayaman 'Sissdem, comes from the same year . In 2005 the album Im Regen was released , which was recorded at its benefit concert on July 30, 2005 in Bad Reichenhall. In 2007 Söllner released the studio album Viet Nam , also recorded with Bayaman 'Sissdem.

Since the city of Bad Reichenhall disregarded a referendum (concerning the area of the collapsed ice rink Bad Reichenhall) and to commemorate the victims of the collapse of that sports facility , Söllner held a sit-down on the area from January 16 to February 10, 2009 the ice rink. Shortly after the accident, Söllner gave a benefit concert in Bad Reichenhall for the benefit of the victims' relatives in spring 2006.

At the TFF.Rudolstadt , one of the most important and largest folk festivals in Europe, Hans Söllner was awarded the German Ruth World Music Prize in 2009 . The jury recognized “a poetic and singing anarch of the German music scene who is deeply at home in the Bavarian language and living space” .

On November 18, 2011 Söllner released the album Mei Zuastand , which contains many songs from his entire career, which he re-recorded with Bayaman 'Sissdem. In March 2012 his fourth film Söllner Wirtshaustour was released , which accompanied him at his concerts in Bavarian taverns in autumn 2011. On October 26, 2012, the album SoSoSo was released , which contains previously unreleased tracks with and without a band. On November 22, 2013, the album Zuastand 2 was released with old songs that Söllner, like the 2011 album Mei Zuastand , recorded again with his band.

His twentieth album Enough was released on October 12, 2018 .

Styles and reception

Musically, Söllner mostly uses traditional styles. However, he succeeds in turning this into a chatting hour and sometimes a bitter accusation with astute texts. The existence of the little man, also in relation to his own person, is Söllner's preferred subject. In this context, he often problematizes issues such as unemployment and the abuse of and powerlessness in the face of official authority, but also aspects of family life, so that his concerts sometimes take on a manifestation-like character. His earlier albums in particular were often created from compilations of live recordings .

Söllner played among others at the Chiemsee Reggae Summer in Übersee (2001, 2003, 2007, 2009). TV recordings were broadcast on Bayerischer Rundfunk in the midnight music window for regional artists. Bayerischer Rundfunk advertised the event with the words "Hans Söllner, the Bavarian veteran of German reggae", which referred to the stage nature and image of the artist. Söllner himself complements these characterizations temporarily with an outfit in the Jamaica style. His basic attitude can by no means be limited to the often assumed creed of the Rastafarian . Under the heading "TOO SLOW" (Hans Söllner on the Mehmet case) of March 7, 2005, the following lines can be found on Hans Söllner's homepage:

“I love this country and my homeland, I love this world and the people and beings that live and be on it in all their colors, languages and smells. I recognize the diversity and all violence, pain and fears are an ulcer in our society, which is no longer in harmony with nature. "

Tension with the state

Söllner at a court hearing (1997)

Hans Söllner sees himself as a rebel and a critical contemporary who publicly speaks out against any form of abuse of power against humans and animals.

In the early 1980s he came into conflict with the police when he showed solidarity with other people and occupied a house in Munich. He was later convicted for not only criticizing but also insulting politicians when appearing on stage.

In 2000, Hans Söllner sued for his right as a Rastafarian to smoke marijuana to practice religion, which is protected by the constitution. The Federal Administrative Court , however, dismissed this action. Because of police measures against him, he tries to defend himself, as well as against perceived arbitrariness by the authorities.

A police search of the house of Söllner and his music publisher, Trikont Musik-Verlag, caused a sensation in 2006 , when a T-shirt sold by Söllner was confiscated. This showed President Bush and Prime Minister Blair next to a portrait of Adolf Hitler , underneath was the refrain of a popular song by Söllner "Hitler, Bush, Blair - International" (The full wording of the chorus read: "A bastard remains a bastard, no matter where it comes from Whether public prosecutor or president, name doesn't matter, Hitler, Bush, Blair - International ”.) The district court of Traunstein also announced on May 24th the accusation of the public prosecutor that Hans Söllner had spread a“ mark of an anti-constitutional organization ”in the form of the image of Hitler 2006 took place. The district court of Traunstein approved Söllner's complaint on June 27, 2006 and determined that the searches at Trikont and Söllner were illegal.

In 2017, he confessed to opposing the vaccination and testified that he had not had his children vaccinated either. He repeated the statement in early March 2020 in an interview with Passauer Neue Presse .

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic , Söllner became active with views and posts on Facebook. In April 2020, he received a fine of 50 euros for a posting. He had called on his followers to visit old and sick relatives, as well as children and sisters in the hospitals, although this was forbidden in Bavaria at the time. Subsequently, his contributions became more and more conspiracy ideological and the reporting increased, so that his record label, the Trikont publishing house , distanced itself from it. "His comparisons with the Third Reich are completely unfounded and play down the terror of the Nazi regime in an unbearable way," said the head of Trikont, Eva Mair-Holmes.
