The Rudolstadt Festival , previously Tanz & FolkFest , TFF.Rudolstadt , TFF Rudolstadt , since 2016 Rudolstadt Festival , is the largest folk - roots - world music festival in Germany. It takes place annually in Rudolstadt, Thuringia, on the first full weekend in July from Thursday to Sunday. At the same time, the festival is one of the most important and largest folk festivals in Europe. The 2017 and 2018 festivals held record visitor numbers with around 100,000 guests . The stages are set up in the old town, in the neighboring Heinepark and on the grounds of the Heidecksburg , which rises above the city. From 1992 to 2001 the Folk Promotion Prize was awarded at the festival, and since 2002 the German World Music Prize RUTH .
The festival is organized by the City of Rudolstadt's Culture Service. Festival directors are Petra Rottschalk and Simone Dake.

The bands from all over the world play a wide range of styles: from traditional folklore to hip-hop, from jazz to punk, from rock to techno. What they all have in common is that they use traditional elements in their music - be it bagpipes being blown to electro beats, banjos mixing with electric guitars or rock bands intoning traditional lyrics.
Musical focus
The festival has different focuses:
- Country focus (since 1993)
- Various bands present modern folk music from this country. The spectrum is as broad as that of the entire festival, so it is not limited to traditional elements.
- Instrument focus (1991 to 2015)
- Around a dozen artists from different continents are invited, all of whom have mastered a particular folk instrument. They play in their own bands as well as in the Magic Instrument Group - a jam session by these artists who meet for the TFF a week before the festival and give a concert together.
- Dance of the year (from 2002)
- International bands play this folk dance for everyone, especially in the dance tent.
- Regional focus (2001 to 2009)
- Different folk traditions of this German region are presented.

Dance Festival of the GDR (1955–1989)
In 1955 the " 1st Festival of German Folk Dance " was organized in Rudolstadt. On the one hand, it was intended to give socialism a folkloric foundation. Secondly, it conjured up German unity, a goal that the government was still pursuing at that time. And finally, German tradition should be set against “American non-culture” such as rock'n'roll and jazz. Rudolstadt was recommended - like Wernigerode at first - because of its location in the middle of Germany and the old town with a castle above, which was not damaged by the war. The all-German orientation of the "dance festival" was omitted at the following festivals, which took place every two years. Instead, groups came from Eastern Europe.
From June 30th to July 1st 1989 the 17th and last dance festival of the GDR took place.
Dance and Folk Festival and TFF (1991–2015)

The first festival in 1991 had a completely new direction. Now alternative folk music should predominate. The dance and folk festival - as a fusion of the old dance festival with folk music - now practically realized the all-German idea, admittedly without an ideological superstructure. In addition to its central location, Rudolstadt now also offered organizational experience. Over 90 groups and soloists from 22 countries came to this first dance and folk festival.
In the following years until the mid-1990s, the festival grew steadily. In the years 2010–2013, the number of visitors averaged over 75,000, depending on the weather. In 2013, around 70 bands performed on more than 20 stages from July 4 to July 8, and around 60 groups and soloists (figures from May 4, 2013) played in the alleys of the old town. You can dance in the old town hall, in the town hall and in the dance tent in Heinepark (on the right side of the Saale), where there is also a children's party to watch, listen to and participate in. Workshops and lectures are also held. Parts of the festival are now broadcast live or with a time delay on Deutschlandradio (Deutschlandfunk, DLF Kultur), MDR Kultur, HR2, WDR 3 and BR-Klassik as well as other European radio stations. Arte looked after the main stage in Heinepark for several years and broadcast some concerts from there as a live stream .
According to the organizer, around 87,000 visitors came in 2013. In order to counter the threat of capping the number of visitors due to a lack of space, those responsible have put the festival forward by one day since 2011; it has since started on the first Thursday in July and lasts until the following Sunday evening. Already from 2000 to 2010 there was an exclusive concert on the Thursday before the festival at Heidecksburg, for which a separate ticket was required.
Rudolstadt Festival (since 2016)
After the festival in 2015, the event was renamed and in 2016 it was held for the first time under the title Rudolstadt Festival . According to the organizer, “it became clear that the musical diversity of the festival would no longer be reflected in the name TFF. That the abbreviation regularly led to misunderstandings and that the festival team is increasingly finding it too one-sided. That's why it is now renamed the 'Rudolstadt Festival'. Without a hyphen. ”In terms of content, however, nothing has changed. However, the organizers write the name of the festival in the 2016 program booklet with a hyphen.
In 2018, the co-initiator of the dance and folk festival after the fall of the Wall and longstanding festival director Ulrich Doberenz was bid farewell. The freelance music manager Simone Dake took over the management from him in 2018. She has been working there since the beginning of the festival, the first few years in catering, later in the management team.
Organization and costs
The Rudolstadt Festival is carried out on behalf of the specialist service for culture, youth, tourism and sport (formerly the cultural department) of the city of Rudolstadt. Financing is mainly provided through the sale of tickets and sponsors. The actual implementation is a matter for the festival team with full-time management and numerous volunteers.
