Georg Wurth (* 1972 in Remscheid ) is a German lobbyist and activist . He is the owner of a company that represents the interests of the hemp movement in Germany under the name Deutscher Hanfverband . He became known through his participation in the Pro7 / Sat.1 TV / online casting show Millionärswahl , in which he took first place with his project of cannabis legalization on January 25, 2014 and won one million euros. As an expert, he also answered questions several times at hearings in committees of the Bundestag and in the Berlin Senate.

Life and education

Georg Wurth studied after high school and civil service in 1992 as a civil servant in the higher service tax law and graduated as a financial economist (FH) . In 1996 Wurth showed himself up for possession of 4 grams of hemp flowers as part of a political campaign. He linked his ad with the demand for cannabis legalization. After the voluntary disclosure, he co-founded the drug policy working group of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen in NRW, the Green Youth Expert Forum on Drug Policy and the Federal Network on Drug Policy among the Greens. He co-wrote the Green Youth's “basic drug policy program”. From 1997 to 2000 he was politically active at Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen in Remscheid and u. a. Group leader. In 1998 he stood as a direct candidate in the federal election for the Greens in constituency 71 in Solingen and received 3.85% of the first votes. Wurth has been the managing director of the German Hemp Association (DHV) since 2002 and its owner since 2004 . As a representation of the interests of both the hemp industry and the advocate of legalization, the DHV, which is managed as a sole proprietorship by Georg Wurth, has numerous German head shops , grow shops and companies from the hemp industry such as the magazines Grow! and hanfjournal or Sensi Seeds as members and over 2000 "private sponsors ". The main goal of the DHV is "the legalization of hemp products as luxury goods under consumer-friendly conditions". In addition to the legalization of cannabis as an intoxicant , the DHV also advocates cannabis as a medicinal product and the use of industrial hemp . The DHV is based in Berlin. It is the largest advocacy group for cannabis users in Germany.

Establishment of cannabis social clubs

Georg Wurth supports the establishment of Cannabis Social Clubs (CSC) . In 2010 Wurth started the petition “Decriminalization of cannabis users” to the German Bundestag. The petition received 21,309 signatures during the signing period. He was invited to the Committee for Health of the German Bundestag as an expert for the hearing on the motion “Legalization of cannabis through the introduction of cannabis clubs” by the Left Party . In 2013, the parliamentary group of the Greens in Kassel also submitted a corresponding motion to the local parliament at Wurth's initiative. Hanffreunde Münster was founded as a result of a CSC citizen application based on a DHV template. The Münster application was passed on September 16, 2015 by a large majority in the city council. However, the BfArM rejected the city's application. A model project application limited to medical cannabis to combat delivery bottlenecks received the support of Munich's Lord Mayor Dieter Reiter and was unanimously decided on May 10, 2019.

Future dialogue with Angela Merkel

In 2011/12, Georg Wurth's question on the legalization of cannabis received the most support in Angela Merkel's future dialogue . Merkel answered the questions. In the opinion of Georg Wurth and the Hemp Association, she was uninformed.

Millionaire election

Georg Wurth participated in the in January 2014 millionaire choice of the ProSiebenSat.1 Media part. In the run-up, Wurth was already considered a favorite. On January 25, 2014, in his role as managing director of the DHV, he won the casting show and with it one million euros. Supporters were mobilized by advocating parallels to Colorado Amendment 64 , which recently went into effect on January 1st. Although the show was a quota disaster for the broadcasters, his participation sparked a controversial discussion. The profit from the show flowed into the expansion of the DHV - more employees, new office and video room - as well as in campaigns to bring the topic of "legalization of cannabis" more to the public. The biggest campaign should be the broadcast of the first German commercials for the legalization of cannabis.

Commercials for the legalization of cannabis

In November 2014, the German Hemp Association presented commercials for the legalization of cannabis. The three spots deal with the topics of cannabis as medicine, the decriminalization of consumers and the legalization or regulation of the existing cannabis market. Although all the TV channels asked for refused to broadcast the spots and they are only broadcast in cinemas and on YouTube, they met with great media interest.

Local groups

In January 2015, the DHV published a local group concept for volunteer supporters. Currently (as of July 21, 2017) there are 17 DHV local groups: Ansbach, Augsburg, Berlin, Dresden, Düsseldorf, Erfurt, Freiburg, Göttingen, Karlsruhe, Kempten (Allgäu), Memmingen, Munich, Münster, Rhein-Neckar, Rostock, Stuttgart, Ulm.
