Head shop

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A head shop (or head shop ) is usually a small shop that sells accessories for cannabis consumption .

For example, water pipes , bongs , vaporizers and long cigarette papers for rolling joints are sold , as are normal tobacco pipes . In addition, ashtrays , lighters , pipe cleaners, posters with allegedly psychedelic color combinations, Rastafarian , hemp leaf or medieval-mythological motifs, and more rarely also appropriately printed clothing and reggae music are offered.

There were an estimated 313 head and grow shops in Germany in 2016. There were 73 in Austria and 33 in Switzerland.

Legal situation

Head shops are legal in Germany and Austria as long as the drugs are not sold there. In some other countries, however, they are illegal, for example in France, when precision scales or items with a hemp leaf print are offered.

Creation of the head shops

Headshops emerged from the hippie culture in San Francisco in the 1960s . In 1966, Jeff Glick opened a store called the Head Shop on East Ninth Street in New York City , coining the name for similar stores. At first the shops were only located in the trendy Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco, but they soon spread across the United States. The Heidi Loves You shop in Frankfurt am Main opened by Paul-Gerhard Hübsch (1946–2011) in May 1968 was the first of its kind in Germany. After a raid, the shop was closed again in September of the same year by the police and the regulatory authorities.
