Ashtray with cigarette and match

An ashtray (also ashtray or ashtray for short ) serves as a temporary container for ashes and stubs from cigarettes and cigars . Some ashtrays have recesses on the edge for storing tobacco products .

Models

Simple table ashtray

Simple table ashtrays are about the size of a hand and have the shape of a flat bowl, some of which are circular with an even rim. The edge is often provided with depressions in which one can put the tobacco products. There is partly a bump in the middle of the ashtray. When you squeeze out the cigarette, it prevents the ash and cigarette remains in the ashtray from coming into contact with your hand.

Centrifugal ashtrays

A centrifugal ashtray consists of a cylindrical container that is closed with a screw cap. The cigarette is not pressed out at the bottom of the ashtray, but in the recess in the screw cap. This is a round disc that is attached to a spiral in the middle . The spiral is attached to a threaded ring and is pushed upwards with the help of a spring. At the top of the spiral is a stored handle. If you push the spiral downwards, the disc descends into the container and begins to rotate. By lowering at the same time as the rotation , the ashes and possibly the cigarette stub are thrown into the ash container ( centrifugal force ). Then the round disc rises again and the ash container is closed relatively odor-tight. This principle has been significantly improved and patented by the Schwäbisch Gmünder company Erhard & Söhne .

More types

There are ashtrays with a mechanism that allows the ashes to be transported inside to prevent further contact. There are also lockable pocket ashtrays for on the go, and those that are designed for single use. These usually consist of coated paper or aluminum material.

Ashtrays as design objects

Many well-known designers have also designed ashtrays:

Ashtray with advertising

Ashtrays with logos of a tobacco brand are often provided in pubs or restaurants by the cigarette industry or a tobacco wholesaler in order to encourage more smokers to buy their brand. Companies from other areas also use this advertising option, such as breweries or taxi companies . Ashtrays are also often used as promotional gifts .
