The Erhard & Söhne GmbH is a metal processing company based in the Baden-Württemberg Schwabisch Gmund . After a long and eventful history, the company is now an automotive supplier and, after being taken over as Magna Steyr Fuel Systems GmbH, Schwäbisch Gmünd plant, belongs to the Austrian Magna Steyr Group.

history

Carl Gottlieb Erhard, pastor's son from Großheppach , was able to settle in Gmünd by marrying a Debler daughter. He became a partner in Gerber & Co, left there in 1843 with a severance payment of 100,000 guilders and, with the help of his sons Carl and Julius Erhard, founded the Erhard & Söhne silver and metal goods factory. Today it is the oldest manufacturing factory in the city.

He recruited specialists to fill the niche in the market for the manufacture of fire-gilded metal goods . His sons were trained as chasers and engravers . The company specialized in haberdashery items made of brass and bronze, silver-plated or gold-plated. In addition, dollhouse furniture , buttons , buckles , locks , crosses , holy cauldrons , confirmation medals , altar lights and monstrances were made.

It was produced for export and the German states, which is why the building was expanded in 1864. The company grew to 3,000 employees, so that the grandchildren Carl and Paul Hermann had more factory buildings built around 1900.

The company participated in the development of the Unimog after the Second World War and is now a manufacturer of tanks for commercial vehicles under the name Erhard Automotive .

At the beginning of 2011, the company was taken over by the automotive supplier Magna Steyr in the wake of the financial crisis .
