The constituency includes the cities and communities of Biebertal , Gießen , Heuchelheim , Lollar , Staufenberg and Wettenberg . Before the state elections in 2008, the towns of Fernwald, Lollar and Staufenberg were added to the constituency. The constituency is the residence of Prime Minister Volker Bouffier , who always ran as a direct candidate in the constituency of Gießen II .

The constituency of Gießen I was created on January 1, 1983, before that Biebertal and Wettenberg belonged to the previous constituency 17 , the city of Gießen to the then constituency 19 and Heuchelheim to the old constituency 20 .
