Emperor Go-Horikawa ( Japanese 後 堀 河 天皇 , Go-Horikawa-tenō ; * March 22, 1212 , † August 31, 1234 ) was the 86th Emperor of Japan (July 29, 1221– November 17, 1232). His proper name was Yutahito ( 茂 仁 )

He was a grandson of Emperor Takakura and the father of Emperor Shijō .

His father Prince Morisada was the second son of Emperor Takakura and he was called Go-Takakura-in ( 後 高 倉 院 ). Before his coronation, he prepared to become a Buddhist monk, but the Kamakura shogunate wanted him to be the next emperor after defeating the courtly faction in the Jokyu war . He ascended the throne at the age of 10, but his father wielded imperial power. The official regent ( Sesshō ) was initially Konoe Iezane, but Hōjō Yoshitoki was the actual ruler as shikken . After the death of his father in 1223 the emperor ruled himself. In 1232 he passed the throne to his first son, Prince Mitsuhito .

One of his wives was called Takatsukasa-in ( 鷹 司 院 ; † 1275).
