Takakura (Tennō)

Emperor Takakura ( Japanese 高 倉 天皇 , Takakura-tennō ; * September 23, 1161 ; † January 30, 1181 ) was the 80th Tennō of Japan . He ruled from March 30, 1168 to March 18, 1180.

His proper name was Norihito ( 憲 仁 ). His father was the former emperor Go-Shirakawa , his mother Taira no Shigeko was a sister-in-law of Taira no Kiyomori . Kiyomori was a very powerful politician of the time and, together with Go-Shirakawa, held the actual power ( insi system).

In 1171, Kiyomori enforced the marriage between Takakura and his daughter Tokuko. Their first son, Prince Tokihito, was born in 1178. In 1179, Kiyomori staged a coup d'état, forcing his rivals to resign from all government posts and banning them. He also captured the abdicated Emperor Go-Shirakawa and forced Takakura to abdicate in 1180 and put Prince Tokuhito on the throne as Emperor Antoku . The actions of Kiyomori sparked the Gempei War , which ultimately established the Kamakura Shogunate .

Takakura was the father of the emperors Antoku and Go-Toba , and the grandfather of the emperors Tsuchimikado and Juntoku , whose fathers were Go-Toba and Go-Horikawa . Today's imperial family descends from Go-Horikawa.
