- September 1st : The election of the Pope in 1181 after the death of Pope Alexander III. is the first election that is held in compliance with the Decree Licet de evitanda discordia , which was passed by the Third Lateran Council in 1179 and which established a two-thirds majority in papal elections. However, it is not a papal election in the form of a conclave that will only be established almost 100 years later. In the election in Rome, the oldest member of the College of Cardinals, Ubaldo Allucingoli, is unanimously elected. He takes the name Lucius III. and will be crowned on September 6th . After his election, Lucius refused to make the usual donations to the people of Rome. Due to the resulting unpopularity of the Pope with the Romans, he does not manage to stay in the Lateran: his ordination must take place in Velletri.
