Nicholas of Verdun
Nicholas of Verdun (* around 1130 to 1140 in Verdun , † after 1205 probably in Tournai ) was from Lorraine originating goldsmith and enamel painter . His works include the " Verduner Altar " in the Leopold Chapel of Klosterneuburg Monastery (1181), the Dreikönigenschrein (long sides) of Cologne Cathedral (1181–1200), the Maria Shrine in the Notre-Dame Church in Tournai (1205) and possibly the Anno shrine in the former Benedictine Abbey of St. Michael in Siegburg (around 1183). Only the Klosterneuburg Altar can be clearly assigned to him, as it bears an inscription that mentions his name (in Latin Nicolaus Virdunensis ). Another artist's inscription by Nikolaus von Verdun handed down the description of a Nicholas reliquary from 1660 in the Worms Cathedral Treasury .
The inscription “Nicolaus de Verdun” on the Shrine of Mary in Tournai has been renewed; Some researchers no longer regard the Siegburg Anno Shrine as the work of Nicholas.
