geography

View of Großbothen

Großbothen is located in the Muldental and on the surrounding, mainly western ridges, on the eastern edge of the Colditzer Heide . The surrounding towns are Colditz (10 kilometers away) and the former district town of Grimma (7.5 kilometers).

history

Großbothen was first mentioned in documents as Batin in 1291. Kleinbothen appeared 110 years earlier, i.e. 1181, as a "Batin" in a document. Großbothen was founded by German settlers as a street village during the eastern colonization . It belonged to the Nimbschen Monastery until the Reformation in the 16th century . In 1867 the town was connected to the railway and in 1909 the Großbothen steam sawmill went into operation.

On July 1, 1950, the previously independent communities of Kleinbothen and Scheddel were incorporated.

Until December 31, 2010, Großbothen was a community-free municipality . This ended January 1, 2011 with the inclusion of the five northern districts - Großbothen, Kleinbothen , Schaddel , Kössern and Förstgen - in the district town of Grimma. The remaining four southern districts - Leisenau , Sermuth , Zschetzsch and Schönbach - together with the neighboring communities of Colditz and Zschadraß form the new unified community of Colditz.

Großbothen is in the network area of the Central German Transport Association and is connected by the Leipzig regional bus with a PlusBus and another regional bus line. The B 107 and the Borsdorf – Coswig railway line run through the former municipality . With the disused Glauchau – Wurzen (“Muldentalbahn”) railway line, the latter formed a small railway junction, which from 1936 to 1947 still included the “transverse railway” Borna – Großbothen . The A 14 runs north of the former municipality and can be reached via the Grimma connection (around 10 kilometers away).
