Zschadraß as the main town is first mentioned as Zcadroz in 1294 . Several districts are older and were first mentioned in a document in 1215. Zschadraß belonged to the city of Colditz for a long time . On January 1, 1995, the communities of Hausdorf, Erlbach and Zschadraß merged to form a large community. On January 1, 1996, the Tanndorf community joined. Today 18 localities are members of the large community.

Here, Friedrich August Hermann Voppel, then a recognized psychiatrist and at the same time director of the state supply institute (insane asylum) at Colditz Castle, founded an agricultural colony in Zschadraß in 1868. Even after that, the community remained closely linked to his clinic for psychiatry and neurology.

During the time of National Socialism , the former Zschadraß regional institution served as an intermediate institution for the National Socialists' euthanasia program under the then incumbent director Max Alwin Liebers . More than 3,400 patients were transferred to the killing centers in Pirna-Sonnenstein and Brandenburg between June 1940 and September 1941 and murdered there. In 1942, the institution was re-profiled as a lung sanatorium with a psychiatric department and from then on was called Hainberg Lung Healing Center . Until 1998, Zschadraß housed a globally recognized lung clinic, which moved to Chemnitz in 1999. Then the clinic was taken over by the Diakoniewerk.

On January 1, 1995, the communities Erlbach and Hausdorf were incorporated. On January 1, 2011, the community of Zschadraß and the city of Colditz were merged together with four former districts of Großbothen to form the city of Colditz.

Zschadraß became known throughout Germany through the impostor Gert Postel , who was employed as a senior physician in the local psychiatric clinic from 1995 to 1997 .
