There is a restaurant in the former farm building next to the castle.

history

Which was first documented surge in 1487, when a gentleman of Schellenberg then, 200 guilders borrows from religious brothers Colditz . The moated castle and manor existed earlier, however, the aristocratic Schellenberg family has been in the area since the 15th century. In 1545 Hans Ernst von Schellenberg became the owner of the manor in Podelwitz. Around 1570 Hans Rudolph von Schellenberg had today's castle built in the style of the Saxon Renaissance ; he is also mentioned as the owner in 1588.

The Schellenberg era ended at the end of the 16th century, and in 1596 Hermann von Heynitz was named as a co-owner and also a tenant. After that, the owners change frequently. In 1691 Ulrich Maximilian von Rechenberg bought the castle and had it rebuilt. He moved the main entrance from the west to the east side and created a new portal with his coat of arms.

The interiors have also been redesigned. In the rooms to the south of the entrance hall, he had Italian stucco masters depict the legend of Io (daughter of the river god Inachos ) on the flat ceilings in place of the cross vaults in three large medallions .

The three medallions showed:

  • Hera sits on a cloud and looks triumphantly at the cow Io, which Argos is overseeing.
  • Zeus sends his Hermes out with the familiar little wings on his wrists and ankles.
  • Hermes has just cut off the head of the guard, which he is holding in his hand, while a real waterfall of blood pours out of the neck of Argos.

The remaining ceiling areas were filled with arabesques , the Rechenberg coat of arms and intertwined monograms "MR". This stucco work was destroyed in the 1950s.

The expensive renovations ruined Maximilian von Rechenberg, and he sold the Podelwitz Palace and Gut Podelwitz in 1693 to Moritz von Ankelmann, who died in 1722. From 1723 to 1781 the estate belonged to the von Kötteritz family. Then it was sold to the Electoral Saxon Chamber Councilor Johann Gottfried Lorenz , a successful merchant and factory owner from Mittweida, who was made a baron in 1790 . His daughter Johanne Wilhelmine Freiin von Lorenz was considered a great benefactress for Podelwitz, so she set up a small kindergarten and founded foundations. She died unmarried in 1850. After her death, the manor was inherited by her next of kin, Auguste Freiin von Reiswitz. In 1867, they had the little Muldenschlösschen built on the Freiberg Mulde. Her eldest son Stenzel Gottlob Alfred Freiherr von Reiswitz and Kadersin-Holzbrinck had the extension built on the north side of the palace in 1893. He then moved from Collmen to Podelwitz Castle.

The last owner was Wenzel Freiherr von Reiswitz und Kadersin, who became heir in 1923 at the age of 14. His mother managed the property until he was able to take it over himself in 1931. In 1945 the land reform was expropriated . A machine rental station will be built at the moated castle and apartments in the castle itself. Since 1952 the moated castle has been owned by the municipality of Podelwitz and used as a kindergarten and for apartments. The castle gardening is continued by the GPG "Muldenperle". After the fall of the Wall in 1990, the palace gardening was privatized again.

After 1991 the renovation and reconstruction of the building, which had become very dilapidated, began. The renovation of the roof, the roof turret and the external facades were completed by 1995. In 1996, the interior work began, so the meeting center was built on the ground floor and a guesthouse and a home parlor on the second floor. The castle gardening business was taken over by the Tanndorf Education and Social Welfare Service in 2001, and the community acquired the farm building opposite the castle and built a training kitchen here and in 2005 the “Castle Vault” restaurant.

On August 13, 2002, the Podelwitz Castle was hit by the flood of the century on the Mulde. The water level reaches the ground floor, and the north gable of the adjacent farm building collapsed due to undercutting. By 2004 the damage was repaired.
