Dental History Museum Zschadraß

The Dental History Museum in Zschadraß combines science and history of dentistry. It is located in the Zschadraß district of Colditz ( Leipzig district , Saxony ), Im Park 9 b.

history

In 1990 the outdated equipment of a dental laboratory from Grimma (Saxony) was taken over. Some things came from pre-war times, such as converted vulcanizing kettles and instruments. Some of it survived the time in a showcase and in a separate warehouse. Over the years the number of museum pieces has grown. The collection of Manfred Zimmermann from Grimma was added in 1999 and Horst Brasch (Schlegel family) from Döbeln in 2000. In March 2000, it was decided to move the museum into the chancellery of Colditz Castle , where the opening was celebrated in September 2000.

Exhibits

The combination of museum and science center is unique in Zschadraß. The complex includes a museum building, a library with conference rooms, a technical center for large equipment and a guest house. The core exhibition currently extends over 250 square meters. The history of the dental profession , the history of the dental technician trade , dental hygiene and dentistry as well as art and cultural historical artefacts, including over 2,500 pictorial representations, are presented. The science center contains around half a million exhibits, such as extraordinary dentures , complete dental chairs in their original condition from the early days of dentistry, human and animal dentures, as well as historical images and advertising materials.

The oldest objects in the museum are representations of the mouth from the third millennium BC, medical instruments that were used to treat toothache 1800 years ago, and oral hygiene articles that testify to prophylactic methods from 2000 years ago. A special exhibit is the workplace of a dental technician around 1873, the oldest completely preserved dental laboratory in the world. The exhibits come from all over the world. The countries of Latin and North America are almost completely represented. Every country in Europe is represented, as are Australia and New Zealand. All of the large states and some smaller ones from Asia are included.

Well over 500 collections come from Germany, as well as over 155 extensive libraries from seven museums (Hornberg, Schkeuditz, Grimma, Homburg, Coburg, Grepin, Halberstadt), seven company archives (Degussa, De Trey, Ubert & Co, Emil Huber, Pfingsten - Solingen , Parts from Ritter, Annaberg-Buchholz (crown factory)) and from nine universities (Jena, Leipzig, Berlin, Halle, Dresden, Charité (parts of the dentists' library), Tübingen, Erfurt).

Bibliotheca Dentaria

More than 100,000 catalogs and international journals as well as tens of thousands of books dating back to 1490 are in the museum's Bibliotheca Dentaria . The entire collection includes around one hundred and fifty specialist libraries from universities, collectors and museums, companies and a great many works from private holdings, for example the Thiedmar Oehlert Collection, the former Bodirsky Private Museum and the Winkelmann Museum. There are also over 10,000 research and doctoral theses in the field of dentistry.

Participation in films

The museum was involved in the equipment of films, the Franco-German film Survival Among Wolves , the Thomas Mann remake of Buddenbrooks and the film adaptation of Marcel Reich-Ranicki's autobiography .

Other dental history museums

There are around 20 museums on the history of dentistry around the world. In addition to the Dental Museum Zschadraß, there are three museums in German-speaking countries that specialize in the history of dentistry and are open to the public: the Dental Museum in Linz for the history of dentistry and dental technology in Upper Austria , the Dental Museum in the University Dental Clinic Vienna - the collection was founded by Georg Carabelli , Edler von Lunkaszprie, who in 1821 was the first to give university lectures on “Dentistry” - and the dental historical Gustav Korkhaus collection at the Center for Dental, Oral and Maxillofacial Medicine of the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . There are also well-known exhibitions in Europe in Utrecht and Turin .
