as-Salih Ismail (Zengids)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Al-Malik as-Salih Ismail ( Arabic الملك الصالح إسماعيل, DMG al-Malik aṣ-Ṣāliḥ Ismāʿīl ; * 1163 ; † December 4, 1181 in Aleppo ) from the Zengid dynasty was the son of Nur ad-Din and only 11 years old when his father died in 1174. As-Salih was brought to Aleppo under the protection of the eunuch Gümüschtegin, while Nur ad-Din's military leadership fought over rule.

In Egypt , Saladin recognized as-Salih as lord, although he wanted to bring Egypt and Syria under his own rule. In 1174 Saladin came to Damascus and declared himself regent for as-Salih and defeated the Zengids outside the city in 1176. He married Nur ad-Din's widow and eventually established himself as ruler of Syria.
