Dietrich IV of Lorraine

Dietrich IV of Lorraine († 1181 ) was Bishop of Metz from 1174 to 1179 .

Life

Dietrich came from the Châtenois family , which were the dukes of Lorraine . His parents were Matthew I , Duke of Lorraine and Bertha (Judith) a daughter of Frederick II , Duke of Swabia . Dietrich was canon in Toul and became archdeacon there in 1164 . After the death of his uncle, the bishop of Toul , Heinrich von Lorraine , he became provost of the collegiate church in Saint-Dié in 1165 and provost of Saint-Gengoult in Toul in 1166. 1169 also became archdeacon of Metz. In 1174 he was elected Bishop of Metz with the support of his uncle, Emperor Friedrich I Barbarossa . Pope Alexander III However, Dietrich refused to confirm, the 3rd Lateran Council deposed him in 1179 and appointed Bertram as his successor.
