from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Emperor Chūkyō ( Japanese 仲 恭 天皇 , Chūkyō-tennō ; * October 30, 1218 ; † June 18, 1234 ) was the 85th Tennō of Japan (May 13, 1221-29 July 1221). He was a son of Emperor Juntoku . Until 1870 his name was not on the list of Japanese emperors. He was then called Kujō-haitei ( 九 条 廃 帝 , deposed emperor of Kujō ).

He ascended the throne in May 1221. Since he was only a child, he only ruled symbolically. His father needed the freedom to prepare for the uprising against the Kamakura shogunate . However, since this failed and the imperial court lost to the shogunate , he was ousted from the throne in July of the same year.
