Reggae Sunsplash

Reggae Sunsplash is a reggae music festival that first took place in northern Jamaica in the 1970s . The festival also toured the United States in the 1980s and 1990s . The Sunsplash is the largest reggae and dancehall festival outside of Europe and, until a few years ago, the largest in the world.

After the death of one of the founders, Tony Johnson, the last Sunsplash Festival took place in 1999. In 2006 it took place again through the initiative of Johnson's family.

As it is very popular, visitors rarely find hotel rooms, so the tradition of camping on the beach has developed.

Most of the major Jamaican reggae bands have played there, including a. Bob Marley & the Wailers , Peter Tosh , The Gladiators , Big Youth , Third World , Culture , Steel Pulse , Toots and the Maytals , Freddie McGregor , Eek-a-Mouse , Yellowman , Buju Banton , Beenie Man , Lady Saw , Elephant Man , Diana King , Maxi Priest , the Haitian musician Wyclef Jean , as well as selected English guests like UB40 and Macka B . As the only German band so far, Los Tumpolos played here in 1998 , together with Ziggy Marley and Lauryn Hill .
