Kay studied law and philosophy . From 1974 to 1975 he worked with Christopher Tolkien , son of JRR Tolkien , on the editing of the Silmarillion . In 1984 he published the first volume of the trilogy The Fionavar Tapestry .
For The Wandering Fire and Tigana , Kay received the Canadian science fiction and fantasy prize "Aurora" in 1987 and 1991. In 2008 he won the World Fantasy Award for Ysabel in the “Best Novel” category and in 2011 the Sunburst Award for Under Heaven . For his contributions to fantastic literature, he became a member of the Order of Canada in 2014 .
Works
Many of Kay's works are characterized by a combination of fantasy elements and historical details, which he prefers as a narrative technique. In terms of content, his works are based on late antiquity ( Sarantine Mosaic ), the European Middle Ages ( Lions of Al-Rassan and Last Light of the Sun ) or the time of the Renaissance ( Tigana ). The novels Sailing to Sarantium , Lord of Emperors , Lions of Al-Rassan , Last Light of the Sun and Children of Earth and Sky play (at different times) in the same fictional world in which after the fall of the empire of Rhodias ( Roman Empire ) several successor kingdoms emerged and the main religions are those of Jad ( Christianity ) and Ashar ( Islam ). It is unclear whether this also applies to the novels Under Heaven and River of Stars , fictional versions of China in the Tang and Song era .
Kay's works were largely judged positively in various reviews.
